Penang has the highest concentration of MedTech companies in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, and currently houses 6 of the Global Top 30 Medical Devices Companies (by sales) namely, Abbott, Boston Scientific, B Braun, Smith & Nephew, Canon Medical and Hoya. All medical devices companies are supported by a robust supply chain with many of the suppliers certified with ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 14000, ISO/TS 16949 and FDA certification for medical devices. The medical devices ecosystem in Penang comprises a wide spectrum of sub-sectors including but not limited to consumables, implants & surgical instruments, and healthcare equipment. With that, Penang is on the right trajectory of becoming the MedTech hub for Asia, equivalent to the world’s top offshore MedTech hubs like Puerto Rico, Ireland and Costa Rica.

Referring to Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Penang has garnered RM6.0 billion in approved manufacturing investments in Scientific & Measuring Equipment (including medical devices) in 2018-2023 period, representing 45% of the country’s said total. According to Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), in 2022, Penang’s exports in professional, scientific and controlling instruments and apparatus (including medical devices) are on an upward trend, contributing about 67% on average of Malaysia’s said total.
